CANDIDATES FOR OFFICE
(Due January 15, 2010)
At
each convention we elect a President, Vice President, and Secretary to serve for the following year. While each officer has a special role to fill, the overall goal of each KANHS
officer is to promote the development of the Kentucky Association of National
Honor Societies. They also share the large responsibility of planning and organizing the
convention along with the rest of the Executive Board.
The
job of a KANHS officer takes very much time and effort and should not be taken lightly. A
STUDENT OFFICER AND HIS SPONSOR ARE EXPECTED TO
ATTEND ALL EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETINGS, WHICH ARE HELD ON SATURDAYS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. THE SPONSOR OF THE PRESIDENT WILL SERVE ON THE EXECUTIVE
BOARD FOR A PERIOD OF TWO YEARS. The sponsors of the Vice-President and Secretary will
serve a one-year term. In addition to
attending all Executive Board meetings, the responsibilities of the officers
are as follows:
PRESIDENT
·
Organize and coordinate all phases of the college fair from beginning
to end
·
Set up the convention room
·
Preside at
the convention
VICE PRESIDENT
·
Perform the duties of the president in the absence
or incapacity of
the
president
·
Membership
·
Publicity
·
Assist the president
• State Service
Project
SECRETARY
·
Keep records of all Executive Board meetings
·
Send minutes of all Executive Board meetings to all
board members
·
Send notices and confirmation of all Executive
Board meetings to all board members
·
Organize and coordinate the Variety Show
·
Assist the president
Although
being
an officer
is very demanding, it is very
rewarding to participate in the work that goes on behind the scenes.
We encourage your chapter to consider the opportunity for NHS
leadership at the state level.

school is permitted to enter only one candidate for office.
Each

OVERALL CONVENTION INFORMATION
(CONTINUED)
·
As sponsor of a candidate for office, you will be
expected to sign a commitment form stating that you agree to
accompany your student to all board meetings, which
are held on Saturday during the school year. Your attendance will be REQUIRED
at all
board
meetings
to insure a well-organized convention for next year. Needless to say, do not permit a student to run for office if you and the
student are unable to attend these meetings.
The fact that not all sponsors have complied with this
required commitment in the past has been the cause of some unnecessary problems for the Executive
Board. This creates an unfortunate
situation for
the
student officer as well. The principal
of any
school
who enters a candidate for office will be asked to guarantee that an
official school sponsor will accompany the student to all board meetings if the student is elected.

Project
“Jarrett’s Joy Cart”
Come one! Come all!
The Kentucky Association of the National
Honor Society invites you to participate in supporting a worthy cause for
children with life-threatening diseases.
Background information
about Jarrett—
As
a patient himself, Jarrett knew that being in the hospital could be scary at
times. He realized the importance of
knowing that someone else was thinking about him and other kids just like
him. For this reason in March of 1999,
he and his mom started
“Jarrett’s
Joy Cart”, a non-profit charitable organization which brings new toys to
children in the hospital. He wanted to
bring some excitement and joy into every child’s hospital stay and to encourage
others to start a similar program at their local Children’s Hospital.
As
a young boy in the hospital, those little presents that Jarrett received from
the “Pink Ladies” really impacted him and made him feel special.
While
Jarrett is no longer with us, his ideas, goals, and most importantly, his joy
remains.
This
is where we can do our part!
Let’s
have a contest between clubs to see
how many new toys or how much money we can collect for this worthy cause. Can’t you just imagine the smiling faces on
all those youngsters, as well as the positive reaction of Jarrett’s family when
they see the HUGH contribution that kids from all across Kentucky have come
together to help fulfill a little boy’s dream??
Bring
your toys and/or money to this year’s KANHS convention so that we can say that
our future leaders of tomorrow really do CARE!
(If
you want to contribute toys, they must be new,
between the price range of $5.00 to
$10.00 and in their original packaging.
Also think about the 0 to 2 year old group as well as the 12 and older
group.)
Check Jarrett’s Joy Cart on the Competition Entry Form, to notify Madge Bruce, by January 15, 2010, if your chapter wishes
to participate in this competition. (Ms. Bruce’s address is 3 Timberwood Court, Ft. Thomas,
Kentucky 41075)
Please
visit http://www.thejoycart.com for more information
about “Jarrett’s Joy Cart”.
