The Visual Arts Magnet
Admissions Requirements

NEW APPLICATION MATERIAL
REQUIRED BY THE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE

All materials are due at Manual by January 16, 2009 unless otherwise noted.  Please make a copy of submitted materials, since they will not be returned.  Enrollment is limited.  Submission of an application does not guarantee placement in a program or school.

1. A completed application form designating the desired magnet program (delivered to the office of Optional, Magnet, and Advance Programs by January 9, 2009 ).
2.

A writing portfolio quality essay, composed and written by the applicant, in response to the following question (delivered to Manual by January 16, 2009 ).

Many visual artists can recall the exact moment when they knew they would pursue an artistic career. Tell us about your specific moment or experience that inspired you to apply to the Manual Visual Arts magnet and how that moment or experience directs you towards your future goals.
3. A completed activities and interest survey* PDF File form which describes the applicant's activities, volunteer work, awards, and recognitions--especially those that relate to the desired magnet program (delivered to Manual by January 16, 2009 ).
4. Two completed recommendation forms* PDF File from teachers (one must be the most current art teacher), a counselor, a principal, or any adult familiar with the applicant's abilities, work and commitment (delivered to Manual by January 16, 2009 ).
5. A copy of the applicant's school transcript which should include attendance data, achievement test scores (CAT-5, CTBS, Stanford), advance program test scores,CATS scores, past grades, and current progress report (delivered to Manual by January 16, 2009 ).
-- Be sure to include your most current progress report card.
6. Visual Arts applicants are mailed three art exercises to be completed by the applicant and returned to Manual prior to the on-site drawing session. (completed exercises are added to applicant's materials).
7. Attendance at a 90 minute drawing session at Manual (scheduled upon completion of the student's application) where a group of applicants will each produce an original drawing that will be evaluated and retained by Manual.
8. An artwork portfolio consisting of a maximum of ten pieces of art (50% of which must be from direct observation). Artwork may include drawings, paintings, and sculpture. Do not include cartoons. (Reviewed during the drawing session at Manual and returned to the applicant)
