  1. JCPS application material (must be completed before Manual can process your application)
    1. A completed application form* designating the desired magnet program must be completed online by January 6, 2017 ). Non-JCPS applicants, do not stop until you are making your school choices.
  2. Manual application material (application packet must be complete. No incomplete packets will be accepted.)

    2. A writing portfolio quality essay, composed and written by the applicant, in response to the following question .
      • duPont Manual High School is about excellence, diversity, and tradition. How would YOU add to Manual’s student population in each area (excellence, diversity, and tradition)?
        Please limit your essay to 500 words.
    3. A completed activities and interest survey form * that lists your most important activities first. Be sure to include any leadership positions and note the total number of hours for volunteer work.
    4. Three completed recommendation forms* ,two from middle school teachers who are familiar with the student's academic performance and one from a coach, sponsor, or community member who is familiar with the student's involvement outside of the classroom.
    5. A copy of the applicant's school transcript (non-JCPS students only)
      • For current non-JCPS eighth grade students a copy of each of the following:
        1. Attendance records for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade
        2. Any standardized test scores
        3. Transcript grades for 6th and 7th grade
        4. Most recent grade report for 8th grade
      • For current non-JCPS high school students a copy of each of the following:
        1. Attendance records for the past three years (including the current year)
        2. A copy of your most recent standardized test scores (e.g. PLAN, PSAT, ACT)
        3. Transcript grades for the past two school years (not including the current year)
        4. Most recent grade report for current academic year
    6. A printed receipt of your JCPS Options and Magnets application confirmation screen with your packet.

    2. A writing portfolio quality essay, composed and written by the applicant, in response to the following question .
      Journalism & Communication is a multi-faceted magnet, including broadcast journalism, print journalism, photojournalism, graphic design, advertising, and public relations. Write a letter to the admissions committee indicating which facet of the magnet you find most interesting, why you find it interesting, and what experiences you have had which have helped prepare you for that area.
      Please limit your essay to 500 words.
    3. A completed activities and interest survey* form which describes the applicant's activities, volunteer work, awards, and recognitions--especially those that relate to the desired magnet program.
    4. Two completed recommendation forms* from teachers (one must be the English teacher), a counselor, a principal, or any adult familiar with the applicant's abilities, work and commitment.
    5. A copy of the applicant's school transcript which should include middle school attendance data, achievement test scores (CAT-5, CTBS, Stanford), advance program test scores, CATS scores, past grades, and current progress report.(non-JCPS students only)
    6. A printed receipt of your JCPS Options and Magnets application confirmation screen with your packet.
    7. Attendance at a 60-minute on-demand writing assessment at Manual High School on one of the following dates:
      • Tuesday Dec. 13, 2016 @ 6 PM
      • Thursday Jan. 5, 2017, @ 6 PM
      • Thursday Jan. 19 2017, @ 6 PM (MAKE UP ONLY)

      duPont Manual’s Math Science Technology magnet is a rigorous, accelerated academic program. Many of our graduating seniors are admitted to some of the country’s most selective colleges and universities and report being well prepared. Because the MST program is accelerated, it assumes that students:

      • --Have an excellent science and math background
      • --Possess an outstanding work ethic
      • --Grasp new ideas quickly
      • --Are passionate about learning and problem solving

      Given that information, write an essay detailing why you want to be in the MST magnet. Address why you believe you would be successful in the MST program and how being in the MST magnet will help you to achieve your goals for your future. Cite specific evidence and past experiences that demonstrate that you are the type of student who would thrive in an academic program that has such high expectations.
      Please limit your essay to 500 words.

    3. A completed activities and interest survey* form which describes the applicant's activities, volunteer work, awards, and recognitions--especially those that relate to the desired magnet program.
    4. Two completed recommendation forms* from teachers. One must be from the current math teacher AND the other from the current science teacher who are familiar with the applicant's abilities, work and commitment. The two recommendations must be filled out on the MST specific recommendation form. Click here for that form.
    5. A copy of the applicant's school transcript which should include middle school attendance data, achievement test scores (CAT-5, CTBS, Stanford), advance program test scores, CATS scores, past grades, and current progress report. (non-JCPS students only)

    2. Art Session
      Attendance at a 90 minute on-demand art session at Manual High School, on one of the following dates:
      The three Art Session dates are:
      • Monday, November 14, 2016 3:30-5pm Regular Review Applicants AND EARLY Review Applicants (Western and Noe Middle early review applicants must attend this session)
      • Tuesday, December 6, 2016 3:30-5pm Regular Review Applicants only
      • Tuesday, January 24, 2017 3:30-5pm Regular Review Applicants only

      Please register online for an art session as soon as possible, as space is limited. Make sure to register for the correct art session and choose only one date/time. Directly after you register, you will be redirected to a page that requires you to fill in contact information. This page is proof of your registration. Print this page or take a picture of it with your phone and bring it with you to the art session. You will NOT receive an art session attendance reminder email. The art sessions will begin promptly at the start time on the 3rd floor of the Art Annex. Please arrive early and bring your three art pieces with you.

      Building Entrance:
      Art annex ramp entrance at the back of the building near the courtyard area and paper recycling dumpster located in the back parking lot. Signs will be posted near entrance.

    3. Art Pieces for Review
      While applicant is completing their on-demand art session, they will submit their three favorite art pieces for review. The art pieces will be evaluated and returned to student at the end of the art session. Art pieces should display the student’s best artwork created during middle school or the last two years of school, either in or outside of the art classroom. Some examples are: drawings, paintings, mixed media pieces, textiles, photography, ceramics and sculpture. Artwork drawn from exact observation, rather than copied from a photograph is encouraged. Any cartoons, manga, or anime should be ORIGINAL creations and not copied from another artist’s work.
    4. Essay -- A writing portfolio quality essay, composed, written, and typed by the applicant in response to the following question:
      • Many visual artists can recall the exact moment when they knew they would pursue an artistic career. Tell us about your specific moment or experience that inspired you to apply to the Manual Visual Arts magnet and how that moment or experience directs you toward your future goals.
        Please limit your essay to 500 words.
    5. Survey -- A completed activities and interest survey* form which describes the applicant’s activities, volunteer work, awards and recognitions especially those that relate to the Visual Arts magnet program.
    6. Recommendation Letters
      Two completed recommendation forms*, one from the applicant’s art teacher (current teacher if applicable), and one from another teacher who is familiar with the applicant’s work, abilities, and commitment.
      Note: Only two recommendation forms will be allowed in the completed application packet. Any additional recommendation forms will be discarded.
    7. Transcript -- A copy of the applicant’s school transcripts which should include middle school attendance data, achievement test scores (CAT-5, CTBS, Stanford), Advance Program test scores, CATS test scores, past grads, and most current progress report. (non-JCPS students only)
    8. Questionnaire -- A completed Art Questionnaire, click here
    9. Exercises -- Two Art Exercises completed by the applicant: Print these Art Exercise directions, complete each of the Art Exercises, and deliver to Manual with the application materials. For one of the exercises a 3 by 3 inch piece of black construction paper must be used, you may provide your own paper or pick up paper in Manual’s front office.
    10. A printed receipt of your JCPS Options and Magnets application confirmation screen with your packet.
